WASHINGTON, Utah (TCN) — A 28-year-old woman was captured by police after allegedly fatally shooting her parents and attempting to kill her brother.
On June 18 at approximately 7 p.m., Washington City Police Department officers responded to a home on East Chinook Drive regarding a shooting. Officers arrived and entered the home through the front door, where they found one adult male and one adult female deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers looked through the home but did not find any other victims or the suspect.
Police initially identified Collin Troy Bailey as the suspect but then said Bailey is a transgender woman who goes by the name Mia Bailey. Police said Bailey was last seen driving a yellow Kia Soul and was “known to change hairstyles frequently.” She was considered to be armed and dangerous.
According to the St. George News, Bailey was located in St. George and engaged in a two-hour standoff with police in a field before surrendering. There was a shelter-in-place order for several hours during the search.
The Washington County Attorney’s Office announced June 21 that their office was charging Bailey with two counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted aggravated murder, seven counts of felony discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated battery. The attorney’s office identified the victims as her parents, Joseph and Gail Bailey.
According to Bailey’s arrest affidavit cited by KSL-TV, Bailey allegedly told police she “did not have remorse for her actions and that she would not change what she had done.” Police wrote in the document that Bailey “told officers that she went to the residence with the intent to kill her parents.”
Bailey reportedly said she hated her parents and “would do it again.”
KSL reports Gail Bailey was shot four times and Joseph Bailey twice. They both sustained gunshot wounds to the head.
Bailey’s brother was reportedly home at the time of the shooting and locked himself in his room. She allegedly shot at his door but did not hit him.
The affidavit alleges, “Mia stated that her brother was not her main target, but she would not have been sad had the gunshot killed him.”
Bailey reportedly told investigators she had a “strained relationship with multiple family members,” and some family members they spoke with said they were “afraid of Mia.”
According to KSL, Bailey legally changed her name and gender last year. Court records reportedly approved her petition, noting there was “clear and convincing objective evidence of appropriate clinical care or treatment for gender transitioning or change, provided by a licensed medical professional.”
The Washington County Attorney’s Office stated they will not seek the death penalty against Bailey.
