For decades, Vatican City has held the title of the world’s smallest country, but this long-standing geographic fact may soon change.
In an historic announcement, the Prime Minister of Albania has introduced legislation to create an entirely new sovereign state, one that will be even smaller than Vatican City.
If passed, the legislation would officially establish the headquarters of the Bektashi Order in Tirana as an independent nation, making it the smallest country in the world.
The Bektashi Order, a Sufi Islamic sect that traces its origins to the Ottoman Empire in the 13th century, has had its global headquarters in Albania since 1925.
The proposed new state, tentatively named the Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order, would encompass only 0.11 square kilometres (0.042 square miles) which is roughly one-quarter the size of Vatican City.
Much like the Vatican, the new microstate’s citizenship would be limited exclusively to members of the Bektashi Order’s religious leadership and government officials.
The move to establish sovereignty for the religious community is seen as a recognition of its unique cultural and spiritual significance within Albania and beyond.
The establishment of a sovereign state for the Bektashi Order could also provide a sanctuary for the sect, allowing it to preserve its traditions, governance and religious autonomy in a manner free from outside political influence.
The proposed creation of this new sovereign entity has sparked considerable international interest.
In addition to the legal and diplomatic implications, the creation of the Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order could have economic and tourism effects.
Vatican City, despite its small size, attracts millions of visitors annually due to its religious and historical significance.
Experts speculate that the Bektashi Order’s new state could also develop into a spiritual and cultural destination, drawing scholars, religious pilgrims and tourists interested in the rich history of the Sufi sect.
While the legislation still requires approval, anticipation is already building for what could become a landmark decision.
If successful, the Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order will redefine global geography.
