Building work on the famous Magaluf promenade has begun as part of a large-scale renovation project in the Spanish report visited by thousands of Britons each year.

The council says the work will be completed in seven months, but businesses in the area have raised concerns fearing the works may last into the summer.

Some have said they will be forced to close earlier due to construction works. The area from Nikki Beach to Pirates Square will be remodelled as part of a long-awaited upgrade.

Aiming for a May deadline, the council has agreed with the builders that the project cannot take longer than this.

This initial phase of remodeling a 650-metre stretch of the promenade will have a budget of €3.9 million (£3.27 million) and will be funded by the European Union and the AETIB (Agency for Tourism Strategy of the Balearic Islands).

As part of the development, artificial dunes will be placed on the beach and shrubs will be planted by them.

The existing palm trees will be relocated and new ones will be planted to create an oasis area.

At first, it was estimated the project would take 14 months to complete but after discussing with builders, the time was halved to just seven months.

Next year, Magaluf will host the annual convention of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

The Spanish destination is a popular spot for Brits to visit with many taking a trip to the party capital of Europe each year. But in recent times, the area has noted a decline in tourists.

This comes after a series of over tourism protests which took place in Spain and the Canary islands. Protests held placards with the message “tourists go home”.

While some residents have expressed frustration at the amount of tourists in the area, others have businesses that rely on holidaymakers.
