A charming city often referred to as ‘Little Paris’ thanks to its French inspired architecture is the perfect affordable city break getaway.

Bucharest, Romania’s capital city, has gorgeous tree-lined avenues, lively bars, antique shops, characterful museums and you won’t be rubbing shoulders with tourists as the city is less crowded than other European capitals.

Nicknamed “the Paris of the East”, the city’s Arcul de Triumf was constructed in 1935 to be modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and is a must to visit.

The building has an internal staircase so visitors can climb to the top to explore its museum and then enjoy panoramic views over the city on its terrace.

And what better way to take a rest from sightseeing other than to sit down with a refreshing drink, wine drinkers will be pleased to hear that a bottle of wine will set you back just £5.

If you are a beer drinker you will come home with change as pint can be as cheap as £1.70. Those who need a coffee to kickstart their day can pick up a cappuccino for £2.46 or an expresso for £2.45.

According to the cost of living aggregator Numbeo, a three-course meal for two, at a mid-range restaurant, averages around £43 making Bucharest the ideal city break on a budget.

In the city you will find Caru’ cu bere, a traditional restaurant with stained-glass windows , which serves traditional beef and Moldavian stew for just £5.

Getting around is easy, too as Bucharest is very walkable. Bucharest’s city centre is very pedestrian-friendly, and many of the main attractions, like the Old Town, the Palace of the Parliament, and the Romanian Athenaeum, are within walking distance of each other.

The city’s wide sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and parks make it easy to get around on foot.

However, the transport is very affordable. A typical single journey on the tram and subway network costs just over 50p.

Meanwhile the average price of a two-star hotel in Bucharest is around £37 per night or a three-star hotel works out at around £61 per night.
