A Russian cargo ship used to supply troops in Syria has sunk in the Mediterranean sea.

The Ursa Major got into trouble while sailing between Spain and Algeria.

Fourteen sailors were rescued, but two are reported to be still missing.

The ship sank after an explosion in its engine room, according to reports.

Video footage of the ship shows it heavily listing to its starboard side with its bow much lower down in the water than usual.

The unverified footage was filmed on December 23 by a passing ship and published on Russia‘s life.ru news outlet on Tuesday.

The Ursa Major left Saint Petersburg on December 11 and was last seen sending a signal at 2204 GMT on Monday between Algeria and Spain.

The ship was on its way to Vladivostok, but had called at the Syrian port of Tartus on a previous trip. It has previously been used to ferry equipment and supplies to Russian troops in Syria, according to the outlet Mediazona.

The operator and owner is a company called SK-Yug, part of Oboronlogistics, according to LSEG ship tracking data. In a statement last week, the operator said the cargo ship was transporting specialised port cranes and parts for new ice-breakers.

Two giant cranes could be seen strapped to the deck in the unverified video footage, circulating on social media channels.

The Ursa Major was one of five Russian cargo vessels, including three large military landing ships and two freighters, that recently entered the Mediterranean Sea.

Analysts suggest that the fleet was tasked with evacuating military equipment and weapons from Russia’s bases in Tartus and Khmeimim, Syria.

In recent weeks Russia has been pulling back its military from the frontlines in northern Syria, following the overthrow of Bashar Al-Assad.

Assad fled to Moscow from Syria earlier this month after rebels captured the capital of Damascus in a lightning offensive that brought his family’s five-decade rule to an end.
