Since NATO’s inception in 1949, it has been the world’s strongest military alliance but there are cracks forming between Europe and its top powerhouse, the US. President Donald Trump has regularly expressed his skepticism of NATO and concerns over Washington’s commitment to the alliance have grown after a series of incidents, including that furious row with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky.
The US spends more on defence than the rest of the alliance combined and Mr Trump has made it clear he expects allies to spend more. The tensions have led to the likely incoming German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warning that NATO could cease to exist in its current form, with Europe taking care of its own defence independently from the US.
