MONMOUTH COUNTY, N.J. (TCD) — A 24-year-old man is in custody after allegedly fatally attacking his girlfriend with a machete while her child was nearby.

According to a news release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, on the morning of Thursday, May 23, the Wall Township Police Department responded to an apartment complex parking lot, where they found a female suffering from multiple critical injuries. Authorities said the victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Further investigation revealed the victim’s boyfriend, Alex Williams, allegedly attacked his girlfriend with a machete. He was initially charged with first-degree attempted murder, one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.

Prosecutors said the endangering charge “stems from the victim’s child being in the general proximity at the time of the attack.”

Officers took Williams into custody, and he was booked into the Monmouth County Correctional Institution.

In an updated release, the prosecutor’s office announced the victim succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, May 30. Williams now faces one count of first-degree murder as a result. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, June 7.
