PLATTE COUNTY, Mo. (TCN) — Police fatally shot a 43-year-old man after he allegedly killed two people, including a 12-year-old boy, and kidnapped his young daughter, setting off an Amber Alert.
According to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, on Feb. 27 at around 11:15 p.m., George Manning shot and killed a woman in a Riverside, Missouri, car wash parking lot, then stole her vehicle. Manning reportedly fled the area and drove to an address in unincorporated Platte County, where he shot and severely injured another adult female, killed the boy, and nabbed a 5-year-old girl. Law enforcement issued an Amber Alert on behalf of the young girl following the kidnapping.
Police canceled the alert the next morning after she was found at a family member’s house.
The sheriff’s office alleges Manning committed other crimes across the Kansas City, Kansas, area, then returned to Platte County in a stolen car.
On Feb. 28 at approximately 7:30 a.m., law enforcement located Manning walking down Vivion Road and saw that he was holding a handgun. Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a statement that Manning pointed the gun at police, who then returned fire. Manning died following the confrontation with police.
Platte County Sheriff Jeffrey Shanks spoke with media and said Manning did not know the first woman he reportedly killed at the car wash. Shanks said the injured woman is believed to be the mother of the deceased boy and kidnapped girl, who is also Manning’s daughter.
KSHB-TV identified the boy as Giuliani Calderon and the injured woman as Calderon’s mother, Mercedes Ontiveros. A GoFundMe for Ontiveros explained that Calderon’s father was killed in a mass shooting five years ago. The page described Calderon as Ontiveros’ “best friend, her firstborn, a light in all of our lives.”
