WASHINGTON PARISH, La. (TCN) — A 23-year-old man is in custody after he allegedly shot and killed his grandparents and then confessed to it.

According to WWL-TV, on Wednesday, July 3, the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call from someone who said their neighbor, Colby Stokes, came over to their house and said he killed his grandparents. Deputies arrived at the neighbor’s home, and Stokes reportedly admitted it once again.

Deputies located Beverly Stokes and Carley Stokes with gunshot wounds. Beverly Stokes was transported to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. Carley Stokes was declared dead at the scene, WWL reports.

Washington Parish Jail records show Stokes was booked on two counts of first-degree murder, cruelty to animals, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and aggravated battery.

Washington Parish Sheriff Jason Smith told WWL that Stokes has a past criminal history and has been “in and out of jail.” He said Stokes has dealt with mental health issues in the past, as well as “some drug and alcohol abuse.”

Stokes is being held without bond.
