Two people have been killed and at least 31 injured after a horrific train crash in Russia.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon at 4.15pm Moscow time in the Murmansk region.

A passenger train with 326 people on board was travelling from Murmansk to Saint Petersburg, when it collided with a freight train, causing a massive derailment.

Video footage shot by survivors shows carriages from the freight train lying on their sides across the main line.

In another clip, passengers are seen being evacuated from their carriages by emergency workers.

A man can be heard saying: “F*** a woman with almost no legs. It’s f*****g crazy.”

The region’s governor, Andrei Chibis, rushed back to Murmansk from Moscow, where he had been on a business trip.

He said evacuation buses and a helicopter had been sent to the scene of the accident.

Five of the injured were children, and 14 people were taken to hospital, with four in critical condition.

In a statement, Russian Railways said: “According to updated information, as a result of the accident with train No. 11 Murmansk – Saint Petersburg on December 18, 31 people were injured, including 5 children.

“14 people were hospitalised, 4 of whom are in serious condition. There are two fatalities.”

The company added it would pay out £16,671 in compensation to the relatives of the deceased.
