Five Scottish football fans have reportedly been injured – two of them seriously – in a horrific head-on collision near an airport in Germany.

Emergency services, including four ambulances, rushed to the scene of the accident next to Weeze Airport, approximately 70km from Dusseldorf, on Thursday night. Scotland are due to play Germany tonight (Friday, June 14) at 8pm for the opening game of the UEFA Euro 2024 football championships.

It is understood that all five supporters were injured, with two reportedly in a serious condition. Images from the scene depict multiple emergency crews attending to casualties on the road and adjacent grassy area.

A source told The Daily Record that the fans had flown into the airport from Edinburgh and had hired a car for their journey to the Euros. However, they were involved in a severe head-on crash with a Mercedes shortly after departing the airport, believed to have occurred on the wrong side of the road.

Photos from the scene show luggage and a Saltire flag being retrieved from the wreckage. A dark grey Citroen, thought to be the rental car, is pictured smashed into the Mercedes, on the incorrect side of the road.

A source said: “The fans had just arrived from Edinburgh and had hired a rental car. They appear to have gotten confused and driven on the left side of the road, in Germany we drive on the left side.

“There was a huge emergency response with ambulances parked waiting to take casualties to hospital. It looked like all five in the car were injured, with two of them appearing to be seriously hurt.”

In a statement on Instagram, a representative for the local fire department said: “Serious traffic accident on the airport ring – Shortly after midnight, a serious traffic  accident occurred on the airport ring in which two vehicles collided head-on.”

“A total of six injured people, two of them seriously, were treated by the emergency services. We wish those affected a speedy and complete recovery.”

German Police has been contacted for further comment.
