Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the US President for a second time on Monday as he returns to the White House after his election win in November.

He defeated Vice-President Kamala Harris as the Democrats reeled from President Joe Biden‘s public gaffes and dramatic withdrawal from the race.

Vice-President-elect JD Vance will also be sworn in during the historic event.

The inauguration is the formal ceremony where the transfer of power takes place.

During the proceedings, presidents make the following oath: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Mr Trump is being sworn in for his second term after he was elected in 2016, defeating Hillary Clinton.

Four years later, he lost to Mr Biden as the Covid-19 pandemic derailed his campaign.

While the swearing-in ceremony usually takes place outside, this year it has been moved inside due to cold weather.

The service will start at St John’s Church, Lafayette Square, an important Washington DC church.

At 14:30 GMT, musical performances and opening remarks will begin.

After this, Mr Trump and Mr Vance will be sworn in inside the Capitol rotunda.

The new president will then give his first address as the 47th President of the US, explaining what he aims to achieve during his four years in office.

He will then sign documents in the President’s Room near the Senate chamber.

Following this, there is a usually a parade from the Capitol building to the White House.

Given the weather conditions, it is not clear if this will still go ahead.

In the evening, Mr Trump will attend the Commander-in-Chief Ball, the Liberty Inaugural Ball and the Starlight Ball.

Around 200,000 people are expected to be in Washington DC for the event, although many ticketed attendees will now not be able to see the swearing-in ceremony due to the weather.

The families of Mr Trump and Mr Vance will attend, as will outgoing President and Vice-President Biden and Harris.

Former presidents usually attend with their spouses. Although, it has been confirmed that former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend.

Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg – bosses of Tesla, Amazon, and Facebook respectively – are also expected to attend.
