Africa’s best airport that’s just got even better with huge £955m revamp

Cape Town International Airport has been crowned Africa’s best airport and the second best globally thanks to its modern infrastructure and efficiency.

Some airports in Africa showcase world-class facilties with modern designs. However, others are plagued with outdated facilities, poor baggage handling and insufficient passenger amenities.

One airport that impressed AirHelp in their recent survey was the second busiest airport in South Africa, which was given a very high score of 8.50 with an amazing on time performance score of 8.6.

As well as this, the airport which handled 8.4m passengers in 2022, was given a more than impressive customer opinion rating of 8.4. 

AirHelp evaluated 239 airports from 69 countries, using three essential metrics: on-time performance, customer opinions, and food and shopping experience.

It is all systems go at the busting airport as Cape Town International is about to embark on a massive three year £955 million makeover.

Scheduled to start in 2026, the upgrades are part of Airports Company South Africa’s (ACSA) huge investment programme, which will refurbish a number of South African airports.

According to Travel News, completion is set for 2029.

The new upgrades include a new runway, an extension of the domestic terminal and a reboot of its security and self-service facilities.

ACSA Regional General Manager Mark Maclean said: “We will be building a new realigned runway, which is a big project, revamping and extending the domestic terminal and creating additional international and domestic contact stands while expanding the international terminal footprint.” 

South Africa asserted its dominance in having some of the the best airports in South Africa, with Johannesburg International Airport coming in second place and sixth globally.

The busiest airport on the continent of Africa was given a high score of 8.29 overall, it’s smooth operations and strong customer satisfaction rating gave it a score of 8.3.

Rounding up the top three was Marrakesh Menara Airport with a decent score of 7.33 despite only ranking 168th globally.

The airport boasts strong customer opinions, scoring 7.8 in that category.
