RAF Typhoons smash ISIS rocket launcher as UK crews targeted by terrorists in Iraq

The Royal Air Force has bombed ISIS terrorist targets in airstrikes in Iraq and Syria after rocket launchers were aimed at British fighter jets.

RAF Typhoon FGR4s obliterated a rocket launcher in northwest Iraq after coalition forces were targeted from the ground on April 21.

The Typhoons deployed a Paveway IV precision-guided bomb to destroy the rocket launcher.

Weeks later a Hellfire missile-equipped Reaper drone struck an ISIS fighter in the Syrian desert on June 18.

The drone’s crew tracked the terrorist before taking out the fighter, according to UK Defence Journal.

Details of the strikes were confirmed by Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) in an update on RAF operations in Iraq and Syria under Operation Shader.

Operation Shader is the British operational name for its support for the US-led global coalition against Daesh, otherwise known as ISIS. The US operation is known as Inherent Resolve.

RAF Tornado aircraft carried out the first airstrikes on ISIS targets in Iraq in September 2014 and in Syria in December 2015.

The MoD has said previously that about 1,350 personnel from Britain are involved in Operation Shader across the region.

ISIS used to control territory roughly the size of the UK but a sustained military campaign by a global coalition means it no longer occupies any land.

Government figures show the RAF has conducted strikes in Iraq and Syria using more than 4,300 precision weapons.

Britain’s airforce also provides advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to coalition partners.

The UK and coalition partners have trained some 225,000 members of the Iraqi Security Forces.

This includes training in engineering, medical, counter-IED, urban operations and basic infantry skills, according to the British Government.

However, the threat posed by ISIS still remains, with the United States military saying just last month that the group is trying to reconstitute itself.

The number of Daesh attacks in Syria and Iraq is on track to double that of the previous year, according to the United States.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in July that Daesh claimed 153 attacks in Syria and Iraq in the first six months of 2024.
